Summer may be over, but September is also an exciting time of year in Munich, as it’s Dirndl Time. ☺ So once you’ve taken your Dirndl out of the wardrobe, now it’s time to decide what makeup and hairstyle you’re going to wear with it.
And after all your gorgeous hard work, you’re going to want to ensure that your makeup and hairstyle last all day long. I’ve got some top tips for you to help you choose your perfect makeup look, and to ensure it lasts all day long.
Let’s begin with makeup. If you’re having some trouble trying to figure out what makeup to wear with your Dirndl, I’ve got some great starting points for you.
1. Resist Matching!
You don’t necessarily need (or want) to match the colours of your makeup to the colour of your Dirndl. For example, if you’re wearing a green Dirndl, you don’t need to wear green eye makeup. Both look really good by themselves, but if you wear both, it’s too much. It’s best to focus on one thing only. My advice is to wear neutral shades on your eyes. That way, you can still enhance your beautiful eyes, but it also draws attention to your Dirndl. You can decide on the intensity of your eye makeup, and you choose either a daytime or an evening look. But the neutrals shades are going to go with every Dirndl, and every eye colour.
If you do want to wear coloured eye makeup, it’s still possible to do this. But my advice is to wear it sparingly. Choose one colour (eg: green, purple, blue) and pair it with neutral shades. You could for example wear neutral shades on your eyes, and apply a green eyeliner. This gives a hint of colour, and can really make your eyes pop, but it’s still keeping the focus on your Dirndl. If you want some more ideas on how you can wear coloured eye makeup, you’ll find some more here on this blog post that I wrote.
A red or bright coloured lipstick is always a great choice to wear with your Dirndl. It can really brighten up your entire face in seconds. Red lips in particular are a very elegant and timeless look that looks great on everyone, and with every Dirndl. It’s quite a traditional look too. My advice is to keep your eyes and the rest of your face neutral, as the focus here is on your lips.
If you’re a little intimidated by wearing these of lipstick, don’t worry, as I have a couple of tips for you. Firstly, you can decide the intensity of the lip colour. So for example, apply the lip colour with your ring finger, which will give just a hint of colour on your lips. If you do this with a red shade in particular, it gives that gorgeous ‘just bitten’ look.
Another thing you can do is make your own shade. Mix the darker shade with a lighter or nude shade of lipstick. This will give a medium shade of lip colour that’s not so intense, but still has a gorgeous colour to it. Again, you can decide the intensity. So for example, mix a red shade of lipstick with a nude shade of lipstick and you’ll get a gorgeous medium pink shade.
My Secret Trick For Longer Lasting Lipstick:
This is a trick I always use on my clients, especially on my bridal clients or for events, to ensure their lipstick lasts a little longer. This trick is especially great if you’re wearing brighter shades of lipstick like reds and bright pinks. No one wants to have to top up their lipstick every time they eat or drink. But using this trick, you don’t have to.
- First apply a layer of lipstick.
- Now apply a lip liner around the edges. Doing this step second is actually a much easier way to see the shape of your lips.
- Then take a tissue, and place it over your lips. DO NOT BITE on it. Just hold the tissue on your lips.
- Now take some finishing powder, and apply it over the tissue using a brush. This creates a barrier over the first layer of lipstick you just applied, so that it will stay in place.
- Now take the tissue away, and apply a second layer of lipstick. So whenever you eat or drink something, the first layer of lipstick may fade, but you’ll still have that second layer underneath it, which ensures you always have some colour on your lips.
So now that you’ve chosen your makeup, you’ll want to be sure that it lasts all day long. Following these tips will ensure your hard work doesn’t go to waste.
3. The essential ingredient for long lasting makeup.
For long lasting makeup, there is one absolute essential product that you need. I highly recommend you use a face primer first. In fact, this is a must for me for every day. A face primer is a product that you apply after your moisturiser and before your foundation. I often compare it to paint primer. Before you paint a wall, you first apply a primer, in order to ensure the surface is smooth and ready for the paint. Face primer works in the same way. It smooths out your complexion, and prepares it for your foundation.
Applying face primer before applying your foundation is going to make your makeup last longer, make pores look smaller, and make your foundation apply so much smoother. An absolute must.
You could also use an eye primer, which works in the same way as face primer. This will stop your eyeshadow from creasing, and will ensure your eyeshadow lasts all day long.
4. A couple of essentials for touch ups:
No one wants to be carrying around a ton of makeup products in their bag all day long. Plus those Wiesn handbags are tiny! So you only have enough room for your phone, keys and money anyway! However, I do recommend bringing a finishing powder and lipstick for some touch up’s throughout the day, which really don’t take up much room at all.
No matter what your skin type, we all get some shine around our T-Zone area throughout the day. A finishing powder is great for neutralising this, and for making your face look fresh again and looking as if your makeup has been freshly applied. Apply a small amount of powder to your forehead, nose, cheeks and chin only. You don’t need to apply it all over your face, and only apply a very small amount of powder. Lipstick is also great to have with you, as no matter how long lasting your lipstick is, it’s still going to come off after eating and drinking.
If you have room in your bag, bring a travel sized deodorant with you too. It’s great for making you feel refreshed after a few hours sitting in the beer tents. And a small pack of gum is always a good idea too.
So now that you’ve decided on your makeup, and you know how to keep it looking fresh all day long, you’re also going to want your hair to do the same.
So what is the secret to long lasting braids?
It’s all in the prep, and one thing in particular is going to make ALL the difference. UNWASHED HAIR!! Okay, that probably sounds scary to most of you, or you think I’ve gone nuts! But I swear I haven’t! Here’s why. Freshly washed hair is very soft. So this means that it’s way too soft for your braids to hold in place all day long. This also applies to any updo’s or if you curl your hair. Hair that’s been washed at least 24 hours in advance is perfect for braids, or any type of style. The reason is because the natural oils in your hair give it a lot more grip and texture, giving your braids something to actually hold on to.
Now I know a lot of you reading this probably wash your hair every single day, and the thoughts of not doing this is alien to you. I used to be the same way. Until I discovered a little product that changed my life (okay, maybe not my life, but it certainly shaved a good 15- 20 minutes off my morning routine). It’s called dry shampoo. This will soak up any excess oil that may be in your hair, and it will not only make it look and smell really fresh, but it will also give it a little more volume too. Plus, as the dry shampoo is a powder, it will give your hair that extra little bit of texture needed to hold your braids in place.
Apply the dry shampoo to the roots of your hair and massage it into your scalp. Leave it for about 30-40 seconds. Then brush your hair, to ensure that the dry shampoo has been evenly distributed throughout your hair. That’s it.
If you’ve got very fine hair, this step is particularly important, as fine hair is already very soft. If you do have this type of hair, you could also curl your hair before braiding your hair, as this will also give your hair a little more volume and texture. The curls don’t have to be neat and tidy. It’s just to give you a little more hair to play with.
Finish with some hairspray:
To ensure your style stays in place, spray a good bit of hairspray to your style. When spraying your hairstyle, don’t spray too close to your style. Instead, spray from a distance and in a downwards direction. I love using this hairspray from Schwarzkopf, as it’s got great hold, but doesn’t make my hair feel sticky or tacky.
Keep some extra bobby pins in your handbag in case of any stray hairs falling down throughout the day. These can easily be put back in place with a bobby pin or two, and you’re hairstyle will look like new again.
I hope you found these tips helpful. If you follow these, you’re sure to have long lasting makeup and braids, even if you don’t manage to last though the day after all that beer. ☺
